The Universal Language of Geometry
Geometry surrounds us. From calculating how much paint you need for a room (Surface Area) to determining how much water a pool holds (Volume), mastering these basic formulas is essential for everyday life and professional engineering.
Our Geometry Hub dynamically calculates both 2D and 3D dimensions. Simply select your shape, input your measurements, and we handle the complex math (like the Pi constant, π) for you.
2D Shapes: Area & Perimeter
Circle
- Area: A = πr²
- Circumference: C = 2πr
Rectangle
- Area: A = w × h
- Perimeter: P = 2(w + h)
Triangle
- Area: A = ½bh
3D Shapes: Volume & Surface Area
Cylinder
Think of a soda can. It consists of two circles (the top and bottom) and a rolled-up rectangle for the side.
- Volume: V = πr²h
- Surface Area: A = 2πrh + 2πr²
Sphere
Think of a basketball. It is perfectly symmetrical, meaning every point on the surface is the exact same distance from the center.
- Volume: V = ⁴/₃πr³
- Surface Area: A = 4πr²
Cone
Think of an ice cream cone. Fascinatingly, a cone is exactly one-third the volume of a cylinder with the exact same base and height!
- Volume: V = ¹/₃πr²h
- Surface Area: A = πr(r + √(r² + h²))
Box
Think of a standard cardboard shipping box. It has 6 rectangular faces, requiring a width, height, and length to calculate.
- Volume: V = w × h × l
- Surface Area: A = 2(wl + hl + hw)
Key Definitions
Area vs. Surface Area
Area measures the 2D space inside a flat boundary. Surface Area is the total area of all the 2D faces wrapped around a 3D object.
Perimeter vs. Circumference
They are exactly the same concept! Perimeter is the total length of the outside boundary of any shape. Circumference is just the special word we use for the perimeter of a circle.
